Elevator 702 is officially in service at Coney Island–Stillwell Avenue Station, marking the 16th elevator commissioned under the 37 Elevators Project. Delivered by the Forte-Gramercy Joint Venture, Lead Designer Stantec, and the Naik–STV Joint Venture PMC team, in collaboration with the MTA, this full replacement enhances accessibility and safety for riders on the D, F, N, and Q lines.
EL 702 is one of two elevators at Stillwell Avenue under the 37 Elevators contract and is uniquely positioned on the elevated platform between the D line tracks. Constructing within this configuration required thoughtful planning and precise coordination to safely advance work while maintaining active transit operations.
As part of the replacement, the team constructed a new pit slab equipped with a hung sump system designed to support proper drainage and long-term performance within the elevator shaft. The work involved concrete pump placement and carefully installed scaffolding from street level below the elevated pit to complete formwork, steel replacement, and equipment installation. Additional cantilevered scaffolding spanning two tracks enabled crews to replace elevator glazing and repaint kiosks while maintaining service and station access.
Mid-American Elevators completed the installation of elevator components with precision, playing an important role in bringing EL 702 into service.
Throughout design, construction, and closeout, the project team maintained close coordination with the MTA and CCM/PCEO team. Daily work, service outages, and general orders were scheduled in advance to support night operations, material deliveries, and uninterrupted rider access. Inspections, field surveys, and detailed documentation ensured all work was executed and recorded to the highest standard.
