Escalator Replacement Complete at Yankee Stadium Subway

BRONX, N.Y. - Forte Construction Corp. has replaced two escalators between the

underground B/D trains and the elevated 4 train at Yankee Stadium subway station.

The station is 112 years old, according to the release, and “predates The House that Ruth Built by almost a decade and sees over 5.3 million riders every year, making it the busiest subway station in the Bronx.” During the nine-month construction, Forte replaced the more than twenty years old escalators with newer, larger, and quieter models. The equipment machine room, or EMR, was also updated with a new sprinkler system, more secure doors, new fire alarms, air conditioning units, and a remote escalator monitoring system. This system provides real-time monitoring.


During the MTA modernization project, crews confronted challenges while remaining aware of the increased ridership come the impending baseball season with an opening day game on March 27th. In 2018 and 2019, pre-pandemic levels saw around 8.3 to 8.4 million riders.

According to the release, the nearby traffic volume had an impact on the timing of the water

service installation from underground mains below the street level. As such, crews carried out excavation at street-level during non-peak times.


Forte Project manager Nirmal Bharatia said, “We are proud to have completed this project at Yankee Stadium on behalf of the MTA. These upgrades will not only improve the station’s

functioning, but the passenger experience as well.”


Yankee Stadium subway station is one of many stations across the MTA system to receive

escalator replacements and renovations. These include Roosevelt Island, High Street, 53rd

St./Lex Ave., Bowling Green, Penn Station and most recently, DeKalb Avenue.
