The opening of these new elevators marks a significant advancement in the ongoing Design-Build project for the 14th Street ADA Complex. These additions are a crucial part of the accessibility upgrades aimed at transforming the 14th Street and 6th Avenue stations into fully accessible transit hubs.
The newly unveiled elevators enhance accessibility by connecting various levels of the stations. One elevator transports passengers from street-level directly to the mezzanine, another connects the mezzanine to the uptown platform, and the third elevator links the mezzanine to the island platform which serves both directions. These upgrades are just the beginning of a broader effort to make the 14th Street Complex fully accessible. Three additional elevators are currently under construction for the downtown platform, which will complete the accessibility transformation.
Beyond these accessibility improvements, the 14th Street Complex Project addresses a range of critical infrastructure needs. The project includes comprehensive circulation enhancements and state-of-good-repair work such as leak mitigation and repairs to the Canarsie Line tunnel from 8th Avenue to 1st Avenue. Notable upgrades include the installation of four new staircases, the widening of 21 existing staircases, and a reconfiguration of the mezzanine to introduce two new fare arrays. Additionally, the stations have been upgraded with new lighting and tiling to enhance the overall customer experience.
Cheers to the Citnalta-Forte Team for this significant milestone and for playing a pivotal role in advancing ADA improvements within our city's transit system!
