Elevating Access at 34th Street–Penn Station

Exciting news from 34th Street–Penn Station! Elevators EL 225 and EL 226 are now in service, marking the completion of Phase 2 of accessibility improvements at one of New York City’s most iconic transit hubs. Earlier this year, Phase 1 was successfully completed with the commissioning of elevators EL 227 and EL 228.

As a key subcontractor to the Package 3 Design-Build team led by Halmar International, and Lead Designer, Dewberry Engineers, our team worked closely with the MTA and the New York City Department of Transportation throughout this phase of the project. The commissioning of EL 225 and EL 226 represents the eighth and ninth elevators placed into service for this project and marks the completion of three of the five stations Forte Construction is delivering as part of the MTA Package 3 13-station bundle.

Serving the A, C, and E lines, these new elevators enhance accessibility at 34th Street–Penn Station—one of the most heavily traveled stations in the transit system. This phase of work showcased strong coordination and detailed planning to integrate new equipment within existing infrastructure while bringing all systems and elevator machine rooms up to current standards.

Additional scope at this station included steel replacement and repairs, installation of supplemental structural steel, chemical injection to address water infiltration within the elevator shafts and EMR’s, and the installation of cane rails at existing stairways. Collaboration across all partners supported steady progress and ensured each element of the work aligned with the shared goal of delivering safe, reliable, and accessible transit improvements.
