Opening New Doors to Accessibility: EL 301, 302, and 303 Now Open at Atlantic Avenue-Barclays Center

Forte Construction Corp, in collaboration with our joint venture partner Gramercy and the forward-thinking design team at Stantec Consulting Services, is proud to announce the successful opening of Elevators 301, 302, and 303 at the Atlantic Avenue-Barclays Center Station. These are the first elevators completed and opened to the public as part of the larger MTA Contract E34054 – Design-Build Services for 37 Elevator Replacements across 17 stations throughout New York City.

This marks a significant step forward in a project that underscores our commitment to accessibility, safety, and innovative infrastructure solutions. Each element of this initiative is focused on making the city’s transit system more inclusive and user-friendly for all commuters.

The replacement of Elevators 302 and 303 came with complex challenges. One of the key hurdles was the installation of new elevator jacks—complicated by sand infiltration into the existing jack holes. Our team implemented proactive solutions to stabilize the environment and ensure proper installation. Additionally, accommodating ventilation requirements in a constrained and heavily trafficked station setting posed another major challenge. Through close coordination with the design team and field crews, we successfully addressed these constraints while maintaining both safety and system performance.

Elevator 301, the street-level elevator, received a comprehensive upgrade with community accessibility in mind. The surrounding sidewalk was rebuilt to meet ADA compliance standards, providing a smoother, more accessible path for all users, including individuals with mobility impairments, parents with strollers, and elderly commuters.

A newly installed canopy structure over EL 301 adds both functionality and form to the station entrance. Equipped with integrated lighting fixtures, the canopy improves nighttime visibility and offers weather protection, enhancing both safety and commuter experience.
